Distinguished and Famous people from Wattle Range

🏫 Saint Mary MacKillop

Mary MacKillop returned to Penola in 1866 and began teaching in a converted stable, working towards education for children whose families could not readily afford it. A purpose-built stone schoolhouse followed in 1867, though construction delays tested everyone's patience: Mary reported problems with the ceiling and finish before the pupils could move in. Her work with Julian Tenison Woods helped establish the Sisters of Saint Joseph. The surviving schoolhouse keeps the Penola story grounded in classrooms, building work and children, behind the much wider religious legacy that later brought her recognition as Australia's first saint.

🍇 John Riddoch

John Riddoch settled in the Penola district in 1861 and became a major influence on its development. In 1890 he subdivided a thousand acres to establish the Penola Fruit Colony, encouraging smaller holdings and horticulture. The settlement became known as Coonawarra in 1897, with wine later becoming its defining industry. His original cellars remain a local landmark. The story behind the familiar wine-region name therefore includes a broader agricultural plan, in which vineyards formed part of a scheme to turn pastoral land into productive holdings for a community of growers.

📖 John Shaw Neilson

John Shaw Neilson was born at Penola in 1872 and received less than two years of local schooling before farm work became part of childhood. His family later moved across the border into western Victoria, where difficult farming and labouring work continued. Poetry developed alongside road-making, quarrying and other physically demanding employment. His lyrical writing, often attentive to colour and nature, emerged from circumstances far removed from a comfortable literary profession. Penola's connection is his birthplace and early childhood, while much of the working life behind the poems unfolded elsewhere.

🧭 John Rymill

John Riddoch Rymill was born at Penola in 1905 and became an explorer of Greenland and Antarctica. He led the British Graham Land Expedition of 1934–37, travelling south in a schooner renamed Penola. Survey work helped establish that Graham Land formed part of the Antarctic continental peninsula rather than a separate island group. The expedition relied on careful observation, travel and cooperation in difficult conditions. The ship's name carried his home district into polar waters, while his life also retained a farming connection with South Australia beyond the better-known years of exploration.
